Picture it: A replay of a Michael Jackson debacle happened Wednesday when Senior Damon Clevenger, dressed as the older Jackson, held a doll covered with blankets in Pruis Hall.
Damon then went to the corner of the stage and dangled the doll over the stage, alluding to when the real Jackson dangled his child over the edge of a balcony. But instead of pulling the doll back, Damon dropped it and received cheers from the crowd. Shortly after, he grabbed his crotch in a Michael Jackson-like fashion.
As for the rest of the Homecoming Royalty Fashion Show, a student packed Pruis Hall watched 36 couples dressed in zany costumes sashay across a stage for Homecoming's signature kick-off event.
After the show 10 male and 10 female representatives from different campus organizations were chosen as candidates for Homecoming King and Queen.
From Sept. 2 to 9, a record 4,438 students voted online for who the top 10 candidates for Homecoming King and Queen would be.
The show wasn't only about competition; it also was a light-hearted affair.
Sophomore social work major Jessica Singh said at the beginning of the evening she was waiting to see about six of her friends make fools of themselves onstage.
When the fashion show began, couples were announced in pairs, dressed in costumes ranging from Pebbles and Bam Bam to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
Homecoming King Finalist Damon Clevenger dressed as Michael Jackson for Spectrum. He said Jackson was a Gary, Ind., guy, and he wanted to represent.
"It's just an honor to be representing Spectrum," he said. "I love it. I get to meet a lot of nice people and have fun doing crazy stuff like this."
Homecoming King Finalist Will Chivington, who dressed as a giant bird for Woody/Shales Hall, said he wasn't going to run for Homecoming originally, but had to fill in for someone who transferred schools.
Now he has a chance to be Homecoming King.
"I mean, in the least arrogant way, how many people can say they're in this," he said.
As for another Homecoming King Finalist Moses Jones, he represented Student Government Association and dressed as Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama. He said jokingly he's been thinking about Homecoming since childhood.
"I've been dreaming about this since two years old," he said.
Jones said one of his largest challenges while participating in the fashion show was to represent and respect the image of Obama.
Homecoming Queen Finalist Alivia Johnson, who dressed as Janet Jackson for Black Student Association said she started to become more social and participated in Homecoming to meet new people.
Kate Webber, adviser to the Homecoming Steering Committee, said Homecoming King and Queen would be decided from the remaining candidates by a group of 10 faculty and staff judges. The Homecoming King and Queen will be decided by combining the amount of raw votes participants received and how well they do with the judges.
As for any responsibility, Webber said, the Homecoming King and Queen will ride in the Homecoming Parade.
"It's more like an honorary position," she said.
