'College' is an unimpressive copy

Director Deb Hagan's first full-length film, "College," is a sorry excuse for a flick attempting to follow-up last year's hit, "Superbad."

"College" follows the cliché underaged trio of Kevin (Drake Bell), Carter (Andrew Caldwell) and Morris (Kevin Covais) to Fieldmont University where they become the prey of the Beta Phi Tau house, "hook up" with sorority members and reinvent their friendships.

While "Superbad" created circumstances those far removed from high school could relate to, "College" provides a dull and stereotypical representation of all elements of university life.

The teens embark on their adventure to Fieldmont after Kevin's long-time girlfriend breaks up with him because he "is boring" and she "wants to party." The heartbroken photographer and his McLovin'-wannabe sidekick with his sight on a scholarship are able to recruit their overweight and obnoxious friend Carter with hopes of "getting laid."

The Beta Phi brothers allow the adolescents to stay in their dank "dungeon," treating them as pledge substitutes, and promising not to let the word out about their ages.

Pranks pile up along with the parties, and tensions brew as Kevin catches the eye of one of the brother's sorority sweethearts.

As hazing escalates and sightings of breasts are boundless, the reality factor diminishes drastically. The biceps and demeanor of the fraternity brothers also ignite questions about their real ages just as Judd Nelson's depiction of a high school senior did in John Hughes' "The Breakfast Club."

The efforts of "College" at tapping into the genre were feeble, and it's no wonder the film failed terribly in its opening weekend as it brought in a meek $2.1 million.
