Of the 97 people ticketed Sept. 20 at the Ball State University at Indiana University football game, nine were Ball State students.
According to Indiana State Excise Police reports, the students' offenses were illegal possession, illegal consumption and possession of false identification.
David Fried, director of student rights and community standards, said Ball State reprimands students for off-campus incidents if they compromise the educational mission of the university. Since the citations occurred during tailgating at a football game that Ball State co-sponsored, it will take disciplinary action against the students, he said.
Punishment can take many forms, Fried said. For first offenses, students are put on disciplinary probation, referred to an alcohol education course and required to work at Late Nite. Further action is taken on a case-by-case basis for repeat offenses, he said.
Almost three times as many people were ticketed Saturday in Muncie.
Excise Cpl. Brian Lang said officers cited 25 people in the tailgating area, campus and the surrounding areas.
He said seven officers patrolled the tailgating area from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and four patrolled the campus area from 9 p.m to 3 a.m.
Lang was expecting the number to be higher, he said, but either officers were not at the right places or students were more aware and did well to not draw attention to themselves.
He said he wanted to "hit [Muncie] pretty hard in the future" by raising the number of officers patrolling around campus in the next few weeks.
"We've been busy with other investigations," Lang said, "and that has put a damper on our enforcement efforts."
No excise officers were in Muncie during the Ball State-IU game, he said.
