When Ball State's two football captains take the field for the first time Thursday night, fans will see a familiar figure standing at midfield.
The Cardinals' players selected captains Friday night and chose two of the more experienced members of the team. Senior center Dan Gerberry will represent the offense for the second consecutive year, and 32-year-old junior defensive end Brandon Crawford will represent the defense.
Gerberry has started each game of his college career, including all 13 last season.
"I think that is a great testament to Dan and how he handles himself on a daily basis," Hoke said of Gerberry being selected a second time.
Crawford, a former member of the U.S. Marines, led the Cardinals with eight sacks and 17 tackles for loss last season. He also placed sixth on the team and first among defensive linemen with 60 tackles. Crawford's production last season earned him a selection on the all-Mid-American Conference third team.
While offensive coordinator Stan Parrish jokes about the possibility of having the oldest defensive captain in the country, Hoke said he thinks his players did a good job of selecting the men who will lead them this season.
"I don't think you could ask for two more stable, mature guys who are about Ball State and this football program," Hoke said. "We are very pleased, and I do believe it is the greatest honor a guy could get to be chosen by his teammates as a captain."
