Student hit at Scramble

Irene Stroh suffered minor injuries, was taken to hospital

A Ball State University student is in good condition after being struck by a car Tuesday afternoon at the scramble light intersection of Riverside and McKinley avenues.

Irene Stroh, 24, a graduate student, was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital, according to Muncie police. Sgt. Bruce Qualls, of the department's traffic enforcement unit, said she suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

"She just got knocked down," Qualls said.

The driver Brian A. Johnson, of Selma, was turning east onto Riverside Avenue from McKinley Avenue when he hit Stroh, witness Eric Smith said.

"It was chirping, I was almost to the other side of the road," Smith, an architecture major, said.

Johnson was driving a white, Ford F150 with a utility light on it. Qualls did not know where Johnson worked.

Junior Ashley Parton, a nursing major, called 9-1-1 when she saw what happened. The dispatcher said police received a call at 12:40 p.m. This was the first time Parton had seen someone hit by a car.

"And I hope it's the last," she said.

Qualls said Johnson was not arrested. The student's hometown was not immediately available. Layne Cameron, assistant director of University Communications, said she was from Germany. Qualls said she was from Russia. The Center for International Programs would not release information without Stroh's consent.

About one or two pedestrians are struck by cars each year, Qualls said.

"It's not as often as you would expect," he said. "We expect at least one the first week. I would expect one to two a day when I drive out there and see students just walk out in front of cars while they're talking on their cell phones or to a companion, and they're not paying attention."
