Pedestrian struck by bicyclist; minor injuries to both

Witness: drivers should be more aware of students

A collision between a bicyclist and a pedestrian occurred on McKinley Avenue just east of the Art and Journalism Building Wednesday evening.

The accident happened at approximately 5:35 p.m. on the median between the southeast entrance of the Art and Journalism Building and Bracken Library.

The unidentified woman was walking toward Bracken Library when she came into the path of cyclist, Brett Townsend, forcing the two into a "do-si-do," a woman, who witnessed the accident while driving and called emergency services, said.

"I did my best to avoid her, and I'm very sorry," Townsend said, "but I think pedestrians should be more aware of bicyclists on campus."

Townsend suffered injuries to his face and right shoulder blade.

Officer Amanda Williamson said injuries to the woman were minimal as well.

"Just some road rash," she said.

The Muncie Fire Department escorted Townsend and his black Fuji home after the accident.

Sara Sanders, an employee at Bracken Library's Bookmark Café and witness on the scene, said she believed a larger student body has directly affected safety on campus.

"There are more people around than we've had before because of increased registration," Sanders said. "This is a walking campus and drivers need to be more careful."

Sanders said she's more alert when driving through campus now.

"You definitely have to slow it down," she said. "You definitely have to look ahead - I think it's just common sense."

The accident was the second between a pedestrian and a moving vehicle in as many days after Irene Stroh, a graduate student, was struck by a Ford F-150 at the Scramble Light intersection Tuesday afternoon.
