EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story reported the shuttles' time incorrectly. The story should have said the shuttles will run from noon today to 3 a.m. Thursday. They start up again 8 a.m. Thursday, and run until 3 a.m. Friday. On Friday, they will run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., which is when the cars must be out of the fair grounds lot.
Students will have to move their cars from Scheumann Stadium to a new location this year as Ball State University's first football game draws closer.
Instead of parking on campus like previous years, vehicles parked in the stadium parking lot are being forced to move to the Delaware County Fairgrounds to better accommodate people commuting to Ball State.
Students will have to move their cars by 9 p.m. Wednesday or risk getting towed, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said.
The university buses will be on a 'continuous loop' to the fairgrounds to accommodate the number of students driving off campus. Parking Services sent an e-mail to all university students Aug. 22 about the changes.
Ball State and the fairgrounds agreed about the specifics of the accord this summer. Randy Howard, associate vice president of finance and assistant treasurer, did not return phone calls on the contract specifics.
Every year Parking Services talks to officials from the athletics department to discuss possible changes to gameday parking.
Burton said Parking Services noticed the problem of crowded lots on campus the last few football seasons. It took the fairgrounds until last summer to agree to a deal, he said.
"At the end of last season we knew this would be an issue," Burton said. "This year, we targeted the fairgrounds to solve the problem."
Freshman Daniel Wood said the issue is not a problem for students as long as buses keep their schedule consistent.
"If they need [the parking lot] for the game, then they can have it," Wood said. "From other freshman who I have talked to no one really is inconvenienced. I am planning on going to the game as long as we can get back."
