Ball State faculty plans trip to Hoosier Park in Anderson

Ball State University faculty and staff will be treated to a day at the casino this weekend.

The Employee Activities Committee has organized a trip for university faculty and staff to Hoosier Park in Anderson on Saturday. The EAC is composed of about eight members who plan trips and social events throughout the year for Ball State faculty, as well as their family and friends.

The EAC will hand out admission wristbands at the front door of Hoosier Park between 4 and 5 p.m.

Rhonda Small, a two-year member of the EAC, said she contacted Hoosier Park and made the details. The faculty and their guests will receive a discount on the buffet, as well as free entrance into the casino and horse racing. If they signed up for the Rewards Card that was presented with the invitation, a slot machine card worth $10 will also be provided, Small said.

Hoosier Park recently opened a new Casino to supplement the live horse racing.

Small said Linda Brown, a representative of the scholarship and financial aid office, had the original idea to have the event at the casino. Saturday is the last day for live horse racing until the fall.

The EAC decided not to provide transportation to Hoosier Park because of its close proximity to Muncie and high gas prices.

The EAC needed at least 20 people to attend the event to receive the discounts, and Small said more than 200 have shown interest.

"We try to have something planned all the time and give everybody something fun to do, and if we do it as a group, we can get better rates," Small said.

Every faculty member was invited to the event through a hard copy flyer that was placed in their faculty mailbox and also through e-mail.

According to Ball State's Web site, the Employee Activities Committee' mission is to coordinate enjoyable and rewarding activities, programs and services for Ball State faculty, staff and their families. EAC is based on the firm belief that an effective program is essential to fostering good relations among employees, the Web site said.

Small said a main purpose of the EAC when it plans events is to allow faculty members from different departments to get to know each other and socialize.

Past faculty trips the EAC planned include a cruise to Hawaii and a weekend trip in Louisville, Ken.
