Summer activities

Students attending summer semesters have multiple options to fill down time

During the summer months, some Ball State University students find themselves bored between class and work. Contrary to popular belief, keeping entertained during the summer in Muncie is not an impossible feat.

One thing students can do to keep entertained is go to Lewellen Aquatic Center to cool off and get a little exercise before packing on those weekend calories. Other than the pool, there are various opportunities available through Recreational Services during the summer.

Walter Kolis, graduate assistant for aquatics and programming, said students should use the university as a resource.

"We want to make students aware that we still provide a wide variety of intramural, fitness and open recreational opportunities, and they are easily available," he said.

To get off campus, Ball State students can go to the Village for some fun. Although the Village on University Avenue stretches a few blocks, it is a focal point for entertainment throughout the year.

During the summer the crowds are a bit sporadic, but there is still plenty of fun to be had for a reasonable price. Some Ball State students know there are several bars and restaurants such as the Chug, Dill Street, the Locker Room and Scotty's Brewhouse, but summer specials are not always taken advantage of.

Tim Jenyk, Scotty's Brewhouse assistant general manager, said students living in Muncie during the summer were important for business.

"Our lunch menu, Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. offers entree's from $5 to $5.75 and is comparable or cheaper to any restaurant on campus or around town," Jenyk said.

Students also can play cornhole outside while waiting for your food, or students can enjoy a few frosty adult beverages if they are old enough, Jenyk said.

Another cheap form of entertainment is free Friday night movies. This is an event that occurs downtown on the 400 block of South Walnut. A free movie is projected onto the side of a building while the viewers bring their own seating.

For a day in the sun, Ball State students can gather some friends for an all-day outing at Prairie Creek Reservoir, which is located about 5 miles southeast of Muncie. Students can pack a cooler and gain access to the beach for $3 a person.

Students can play volleyball, horseshoes, basketball and swim.

"We have camping, boating, fishing, ATV trails and a horseback club," Jessica Coons, Prairie Creek Reservoir interim superintendent, said.

Tuhey Park is another spot near downtown that can provide some summer entertainment.

According to the city of Muncie's Web site, there is a public swimming pool, water slide, skateboard park, along with tennis and volleyball courts. The park is located on the corner of West White River Boulevard and North Wheeling Avenue.

Although some might think Ball State is the heart of Muncie, making the venture to other spots around town as well as seeking out entertainment on campus are vital parts of keeping busy during the summer.
