Officer Brandon Qualls is an example for all students on Ball State University's campus. He had a dream, and he went out and achieved it.
He didn't see his college days as the best times of his life, but instead used his passion to get a job at the University Police Department while in school.
He didn't wait until the twilight of his college career but instead gave getting his dream job a shot and made it.
Qualls is an example for students because he shows people can make great strides toward getting the careers of their choice with hard work.
Students who want to get a head start on job hunting should join a club or school organization that will put them on the right path.
For example, communication-oriented majors could work for student media. Theater majors could work on theater productions.
For people who don't know what organizations could help them, go and ask professors in your department for help.
That also includes doing community service you can put on a resume. It might be difficult to find the time away from everything you have to do and your social life, but it's all worth it.
Remember, you are taking classes and doing homework to prepare for your future career.
And Ball State offers a lot of opportunities to students who want to better prepare for their futures. Some departments require students to do an internship, which provides a real life learning experience.
Through work, students can learn important parts of their trade that might be overlooked in the classroom. They might also do better in classes because they have on-the-job experience of things professors might be teaching.
Also, the university doesn't pride itself on immersive learning experiences for nothing. People could take classes and get credit hours while learning on the job with the supervision of a professor. You could get the best of learning on the job with a few tips from your professor.
Another option includes getting a job on campus that's related to your major. You don't have to go too far from your residence hall or apartment to get experience for the future.
And who knows - the path toward your dream job might not be conventional. Like Qualls, you might need to take a risk.
A risk could show you the way, but it might not work out. But all in all, you have to work toward getting the career you want because no one will give it to you.
