AT?ISSUE:? Students need to take advantage of campus jobs; not wait until summer to apply

The summer session has begun, and summer jobs are harder to find than some students might expect. Sure, people don't want to work on campus because the pay isn't the best in the world, but it's better than no job at all.

The country's lousy economy keeps adults from getting jobs in the career of their choice, so students should be realistic about their job opportunities and not be naive about finding jobs off campus.

Students shouldn't expect to find summer job gems in Muncie without digging hard. We have to be practical when we think about doing the heavy lifting work nobody wants to do.

College students shouldn't waste time looking for jobs they can be proud of or jobs they can brag about. Gas is expensive. Food is getting more expensive. It's time for students to swallow their pride and work even miserable jobs.

Beginning in March and April, students should start looking for jobs. Employers hire students to earn a profit themselves, and students need to show they are committed to a job before they are hired.

That includes the campus jobs.

Ball State is a consistent employer in the Muncie community year round. Students might be able to lessen their financial burdens if they work during the school year and won't have to scurry during the summer months for much needed cash.

There is no shame in working on a campus job, and beggars can't be choosers. Students are here to learn and become the people they want to be, which includes earning a paycheck you want as well. Meanwhile, the humble shall be exalted with glamorless jobs that at least let them receive some money.

And a campus job can't be too far away for students who are living in Muncie for the summer. With gas prices as high as they are, commuting costs more than ever, and someone could always take the bus to campus.

Another option is to find an internship for the summer months, which helps teach students to learn their desired profession and earn a little money on the side. It's probably too late to find an internship, but it's never too late to check.

At the end of the day, students' job searches won't be a Cinderella story with a prince charming of a job. Unless you have a family member like the fairy godmother, take the grunt work. It will pay off in the end.
