The Alumni Center has replaced its concrete patio with longer-lasting clay bricks. It is project that Tanner Underwood, Ball State University's project architect, said everyone was ready to see completed.
Alumni Center Director Brandon Johnson agreed the project needed to be done.
The bricks include the names of Alumni Center donors.
Underwood said the bricks' size depended on the amount of donation. The patio's design is set up so that more bricks could easily be added at any time, she said.
Johnson said a good entrance was important so the alumni would be impressed with center as they come in.
"The project turned out very well, and it is a good first impression," he said.
The bricks are set in sand, so they can be removed easily as donators change and so repairs could easily be made.
Before the improvements, the bricks had engraving that was faded and difficult to read. The project fixed that problem, by changing the lettering to a more legible typeface.
Underwood said the current style of lettering also has a black poxy fill that made the letters stand out better.
She said the clay bricks that were laid were more expensive than the original concrete but that he quality and durability of the bricks make it worth the extra cost.
Underwood declined to comment on how much the project cost.
The outside contractor used for the project was a company called FlatLand Resources.
Overall, the Alumni Center was happy with how the improvements turned out, Johnson said.
