A women's volleyball player from Burris Laboratory School signed a national letter of intent to play for Ball State University Wednesday.
Christie Waters is the fifth player to join the Cardinals for next season, joining Jennifer Boyd from Evans City, Pa., Brittany McGinnis from Fraser, Mich., Kaylee Schembra from Roncalli High School in Indianapolis and Alisha Green who transferred to Ball State after two seasons at the University of Tampa.
Coach Dave Boos said Waters was a player the Cardinals were hoping to sign since he became the coach January 2006. He also said she has a great background playing for Burris coach Steve Shondell.
"Burris has tremendous ball control," Boos said. "We are looking for anyone like that and she was one of the best."
The past two seasons Waters was a first team selection for all-conference and all-state. She was second team all-state as a sophomore.
As a senior she had a team-high 308 digs in addition to 229 kills and 56 aces. In her four-year career she had 866 digs, 613 kills and 148 aces in 364 games.
Waters was a four-year letterwinner at Burris and helped guide the Owls to four consecutive state championships. In the 2007 Class 2A state championship match in Worthen Arena she had a match-high 15 digs. She also had eight kills and two aces in the 3-0 victory against Brownston Central.
She also had success on the national level with her club teams. Her Munciana 14's club team won a national championship, her Munciana 13's club team was a national runner-up and her 12's team finished fifth in the national tournant.
In her four seasons with Burris, the Owls went 148-12, including a 28-0 conference record. Her freshman year the team was a perfect 40-0.
Despite being an outside attacker in high school, Waters will be libero for the Cardinals, Boos said.
Last season, freshman libero Alyssa Rio played in 30 matches and averaged 5.58 digs per game, fourth most in the Mid-American Conference.
Boos said he did not know if Waters will start or come off the bench during her freshman year.
"It's hard to tell until you get them to come into your gym," he said. "She has the skill to come in and compete for the spot."
