Students and Muncie residents can rock out for nine straight hours this weekend at the University Square parking lot.
WCRD promotions manager Jade Sullivan said The Launching Pad and WCRD are hosting the first Village Music Fest from 2 to 11 p.m Saturday.
"We're just hoping to get people out there and to get WCRD into the local music scene," she said.
Alan Maugherman, owner of The Launching Pad, said the venue and Village Green records sold 130 pre-sale tickets during April. No show at The Launching Pad has matched the music festival in pre-sale totals. He expects to play host to more than 300 people and for the event to be the biggest ever at the venue, he said.
People who bought tickets early also voted for who they wanted to play the show, he said. In addition to the headlining band, My American Heart, the top 10 bands out of more than 60 won a spot on the lineup.
Muncie band James Brown Car Alarm received the most votes. Golden Eye and A Rose for Scarlett tied for 10th place. Both bands will play, expanding the lineup to 12, he said.
The bands were responsible for promoting the show, he said.
"It's all about who could convince people to come out here ahead of time and vote for them," he said.
All of the bands Maugherman talked to are excited to play, he said. Most of the bands have played at The Launching Pad before, he said.
The band lineup will be diverse, he said, and it will feature almost every genre except country and jazz.
The bands will play 30- to 45-minute sets, Sullivan said.
The event is sponsored by Qdoba Mexican Grill, Sweet Water Music, the Ball State University School of Extended Education, FM Music and Doc's Music Hall, she said.
Maugherman said the crowd will vote on who they think is the best band, and Sweet Water is providing gift certificates and recording time to the top three.
Sullivan said the event will have a tarot card reader as well as WCRD staff handing out gift certificates.
Organizers are hoping to break even with the event, she said.
Both Sullivan and Maugherman said WCRD and The Launching Pad are hoping to make the Village Music Fest an annual event.
Tickets are still available at The Launching Pad, Village Green and from WCRD management staff for $10, Sullivan said.
