OUR VIEW: Dinner time

AT ISSUE: Dining should extend the hours at hot food locations, not just grocery locations

Ask and you shall receive.

OK, not quite. Complain, moan and gripe about the limited Dining hours for years to Student Government Association and anyone who will listen and then you shall receive.

Those with meal plans should be happy to know that Fall 2008 will bring the addition of more than 100 hours to dining facilities across campus.

The only drawback is that the grocery area hours are being extended and not the locations that serve hot meals to students.

Although something is better than nothing, we hope Dining looks at this as a first step toward bigger, better things.

Grocery shopping is a necessity, however, at the end of a long day, sometimes all students want to do is order something and eat it. Cooking is not a high priority in the life of an average college student.

Students should take advantage of the increased Dining hours, but if they want the hours of other locations to be extended, they should fill out comment cards.

Perhaps with enough comment cards, we could prompt Dining to increase the hours of the hot food locations, which seems like it would be a better move in the long run. Students have said they want more hours for hot food places because the grocery stores are abundant in less-than-healthy food options. However, you can have a full, complete and healthy meal at a hot food place like Mom's at Noyer Centre.

Another option to gauge students' true reactions of extending Dining hours would be for the university to send out a survey to students to see what they truly want from their meal plans.

However, this would also involve filling out the surveys. We know students' inboxes get cluttered with all kinds of useless, junky e-mails, but filling out this survey could make a difference in something they actually care about.

Of course, the survey doesn't exist yet, but maybe a head honcho over in Dining will think of releasing one soon.

In the meantime, enjoy the extended hours in the fall. However, if you want Dining to change the locations with extended hours take the time to fill out a comment card.
