MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Nine Cardinals named Academic All-MIVA

Nine members of the No. 8 Ball State University men's volleyball team were named to the 2008 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Academic All-Conference Team on Tuesday.

Outside attackers Todd Chamberlain, Mark Termion and middle attacker Ben Irwin received the award for the third consecutive season, and middle attacker Justin Orr was on the team for the second straight season. In addition, libero Ian Peckler and freshmen James Emming, J.D. Gasparovic, Lee Meyer and Dominic Spadavecchio made the All-Academic team for the first time in their college careers.

"Our guys have worked hard, and they understand that volleyball is something you can do in college, but classes will prepare you for after college," coach Joel Walton said.

To make the 2008 All-Academic team an athlete must have had a minimum 3.00 career grade point average at the end of the 2007 Fall Semester.

Sixty-two players were selected to the team, with No. 9 Ohio State University having a conference-high 14 players. Ball State finished tied for the third-most players on the team with IPFW and Loyola-Chicago University.

"It's a really positive thing," Walton said. "The kids playing volleyball in college are going there for the right reason: to get their education."
