Legislation proposed for easy book buying

Bill to make book info, prices available at class registration

Not much was on the agenda for Ball State University Student Government Association as the approximately two-hour meeting took about 45 minutes Wednesday.

During this time, two pieces of legislation were introduced for senators to ask questions.

The first piece of legislation supports the idea that when students register classes, the class list would be sent to the Ball State Bookstore. At that time, students could see what books and their prices would be needed for those classes. Students could then either order the books at that time, or use that list to compare prices with other bookstores such as C.B.X. and T.I.S.

The second piece of legislation supports the idea that students could use their excess financial aid to pay for supplies such as textbooks, notebooks and writing utensils. According to the legislation, students do not get their financial aid checks until the second or third week of each semester unless a student has direct deposit, in which case the students receive their excess aid the first week of the semester. This legislation would allow students to pay for their school supplies the week before the semester starts.

According to the legislation, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid would allow eligible students to set aside a portion of their excess aid. Any unused funds would be credited to the student's account and would be returned to the student in a reform check.

At-Large Caucus Chairwoman Michelle Voss wrote both pieces of legislation, and senators will vote on them next week.

Senators also met in their respective caucuses and committees. Although caucuses did not give reports, committees did. Below is a breakdown of what was discussed:

Committee Reports:Academic Affairs: The committee members elected Michael Konopasek as committee whip and Ciara Wells as committee secretary.

Community/Environmental Affairs:The committee members elected Leah Ruble as chairwoman, David Voelker as whip and Marco Pretell-Vasquez as secretary.

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs:The committee members elected Shaetonna Jackson as chairwoman, Sam Osborne as whip and Patrick Pataky as secretary.

Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness:Chairman Tim Dykiel said the committee members discussed ways to get SGA's name out to the campus. Some of the ideas the members thought of include: getting the word out about co-sponsorship, having the SGA logo on the thunder sticks that are passed out during football games and advertising for prizes for a half court shot during basketball games.

Student Safety:The committee members elected Michelle Voss as chairwoman and George Walsh as whip.
