Ball State University softball coach Craig Nicholson said he was disappointed with the cancelation of today's doubleheader because of how well the Cardinals were playing.
The doubleheader against Eastern Illinois University, which was scheduled for 2 p.m. at the BSU Softball Complex, was canceled Monday because of rain in the forecast. No make-up date was announced for the games.
"It's unfortunate," Nicholson said. "There's nothing anybody can really do about it."
Ball State won nine of its 13 games during Spring Break, including three of four last weekend at the Speedline Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Cardinals improved their record during the break to 16-12, the best mark in the two-year tenure of Nicholson.
Though he was disappointed the team would not get the chance to get on the field today and try to continue its momentum, Nicholson said, there is nothing Ball State could do to fix the problem.
"The ground's still frozen so there's no where for [the moisture] to go," he said. "There's no good solution until the ground thaws."
When the ground thaws, Nicholson said, Ball State's field trains OK. Rain in later months, like April, does not cause too many problems, he said.
The rain and melting snow combined with the current frozen ground makes the field unplayable now, Nicholson said.
"Two weeks ago it was really close to being able to play on but then we got some bad weather last weather," Nicholson said.
Last year, Ball State had multiple games canceled because of inclement weather.
The Cardinals' next scheduled game is a doubleheader at home Thursday against Butler University. Nicholson said he hopes the field will be dry enough by then to play the games, which are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
