OUR VIEW: Get off!

AT ISSUE: Skateboarders, rollerbladers cost university thousands in damages, should be respectful of property

We've all seen them. They come out when the weather is nice and the sun is out. They wiz by us so quickly we feel like it was just the wind.

Then we see the damage.

Handrails scratched beyond belief, concrete chipped and broken away.

What kind of punishment befell those who got caught causing such destruction?

A $30 fine.

If Ball State University expects students to stop destroying property, something needs to be done about the fines.

Perhaps having a gradual increase in fines per offense, per person would better reduce the amount of damage caused.

You pay $50 if caught smoking, which at worst results in cigarette butts strewn across the ground.

Actual physical damage is caused to property when students grind on handrails, and they pay only $30.

It doesn't take a genius to realize the math is off. Administrators need to stand up and start punishing people according to the magnitude of destruction they cause.
