Cadets camp out at Atterbury

Ball State students participate in leadership, teamwork challenges

More than 50 Ball State University students packed up their camping gear and spent four days at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh for ROTC training.

The training exercise brought together ROTC students from Ball State, IUPUI, Indiana University, Purdue University and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to work together in group situations with people other than their friends.

"It lets them out of their comfort zone," said cadet Josh Warrick.

Maj. Tim Cummins said junior cadets concentrate on two situations during the training: the field leader reaction course and squad training exercises.

The field leader reaction course presents teams with a small obstacle course, and it is up to the team leader to manage members and use the resources provided to overcome the challenge. The leaders are then evaluated based on their leadership skills and character.

The squad training exercises have the same premise, but teams are given more realistic missions to complete in the woods. One team's objective was to sneak up to any enemy bunker and take them down before being spotted.

"It's supposed to be fun for them more than anything," Cummins said.
