As the Ball State University women's tennis team's No. 1 and 2 doubles pairs found themselves sweating out every point in Saturday's match against Youngstown State University, No. 3 doubles player Katherine Rist had plenty of time to focus on her upcoming singles match.
Following Rist's 8-2 win with partner Emma Retter, the extra time paid dividends, as she claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles in the Cardinals' 6-1 win against the Penguins (2-6).
Struggling with consistency, the aforementioned No. 1 and 2 doubles teams were still pulled out victories. Seniors Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and sophomore Sophie Quist and freshman Georgina Thomson were forced into a 9-8 (7-5) tie-breaking triumph.
With strong singles play, Ball State (4-3) was able to claim five more points with wins at the No. 2 through 6 spots.
Youngstown State's Anna Volkova, a Marshall University transfer, claimed the Penguins one point with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Quist at No. 1 singles.
The Cardinals next play in Memphis, Tenn. on Friday against the University of Memphis (3-4) and on Saturday against Tennessee Tech (2-5).
