A week after finishing 1-4 to begin the season at the Louisiana State Tournament, Ball State University softball coach Craig Nicholson said he expects a better performance from his team this weekend.
The Cardinals are competing at the Panera Bread Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., which runs Friday through Sunday.
"This weekend we don't have the top-caliber teams, at least like in a couple games last week," Nicholson said. "I think we'll play better than we played last weekend."
Ball State opens up the weekend by playing Bradley University at 9:45 a.m. and continue play against Lipscomb University at 2:15 p.m. The Cardinals continue Saturday against Eastern Kentucky University at 9:45 a.m. Saturday and East Tennessee State University at 6:45 p.m. Ball State concludes the weekend against St. Francis University at noon Sunday.
Four other teams, the University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, Iowa State University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, will play at the tournament.
While there are other Mid-American Conference teams playing in the tournament, Nicholson said he does not view the weekend as a measuring stick for later in the conference season because you never know which players will play in the tournament.
