With about a month left in the 2007-08 Ball State University Student Government Association session, caucus and committee chairs gave updates on what they accomplished this year and what is left to do.
Below is a breakdown of what the senators hope to finish:
Caucus Reports:
At-Large: Chairman Frank Hood said the Amelia T. Wood Student Health Center would soon have four computers placed in the waiting room. Hood said the reason why it has taken awhile for the computers to get there is because wires in the basement had to be rewired to reach the waiting room.
On-Campus: Chairwoman Michelle Voss said she sent e-mails to University Communications about having student information deleted from the BBook. Voss said she was told students could go to the Registrar and get information deleted now, but Voss said that would delete information from all of the university's records. Students just wanted information deleted from the BBook, she said.
Organizational: Caucus Secretary Jhanelle Baker said there would be a dance marathon Feb. 29 and March 1.
Committee Reports:
Community/Environmental Affairs: Chairman Kyle Johnson said on Thursday he would meet with Mike Planton, associate director for landscape and environmental management at Facilities Planning and Management, about ways to make Ball State's campus more aesthetically pleasing. He said they would discuss items such as battery recycling, additional shrubbery to get more Cardinals on campus and bat houses to get the animals out of some buildings and into those houses.
Diversity and Multicultural Affairs: Committee Whip Shaetonna Jackson reminded senators there would be a multicultural Late Nite on March 1 called "Around the World Late Nite - Part Deux."
Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness: Chairman Timothy Dykiel said there were some "technical difficulties" with the How-to book. In the meantime, he said, the committee was thinking of advertising ideas such as putting SGA billboards into residence halls. The billboards would serve as an information center about the upcoming SGA elections and other SGA-related issues to get people aware of what the senators are doing, Dykiel said.
Student Safety: Chairwoman Carrie Cozad said she spoke with Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations at Facilities Planning and Management, about getting a stop sign at the College and Washington avenues intersection. Because the city of Muncie is in charge of that intersection, Cozad said, she and Lowe were waiting to see what the city said. She said Lowe did tell her that a stop sign was not warranted at the LaFollette Complex parking lot when turning onto McKinley Avenue. Lowe said people needed to be more cautious, Cozad said, but she would look into getting a yield sign.
Student Services: Chairman Frank Hood said he and his committee would begin getting student opinion about having a school supply vending machine in the library and having Saturday hours at the Health Center.
Besides the caucus and committee reports, President Pro-Tempore Kyle Ellis also gave a report. He said he would start making a transition manual for next year's senate. The manual would include items such as what to do as caucus and committee chairpersons.
