MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards no longer winless against nationally ranked teams

Four Ball State players finish match with at least 10 kills

The Ball State University men's volleyball team defeated No. 14 George Mason University 33-35, 30-24, 26-30, 30-26, 17-15 on Friday.

Middle attacker Matt McCarthy had a team-high 18 kills and was one of four Ball State players to finish the match with at least 10 kills.

Along with McCarthy, freshman middle attack J.D. Gasparovic had a career-high 14 kills and eight blocks.

"It was an unbelievable night for him," coach Joel Walton said. "We challenged him after we lost to Stanford [last week] and when we were having trouble finding a third offensive option. ... J.D. really responded."

Friday's road win was the first time the Cardinals (6-6, 2-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) beat a nationally ranked opponent this season. Ball State is now 1-6 against top-15 ranked teams.

"I'm pleased to get one," Walton said. "They're a good team and they took advantage of the things we were struggling with."

The Cardinals next match will be against Rutgers-Newark University at 7 p.m. in Newark, N.J.
