Immersion project kicks off

About 50 students join to produce three Internet, TV series

About 50 Ball State University students involved in immersive learning experiences joined together to kick off a project Wednesday in L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

Rodger Smith, associate director at the Center for Media Design, said students from several departments have been involved in the immersion projects.

Smith introduced Jay Williams to the audience. He said Williams is a Ball State graduate and the former senior vice president of Walt Disney Studios. Williams works at Craig Murray Productions where he is able to help Ball State provide better opportunities to students, Smith said.

Williams said Ball State is one of the few universities with good inter-departmental relations.

"It isn't like this everywhere," he said.

The development of "C2," a comedy series, is being overseen by three people, Michael Chandler said.

Chandler said the show would air in Webisodes, which are episodes of a television show that air online.

Chandler oversaw the production of "C2." He said because the project was so broad, it was necessary to find several talented students to fit the roles.

He said he became involved in the project through Smith, and they both decided he would be the executive producer.

Lauren Peak said she is in charge of the physical production of "C2."

She said she is responsible for the special features, including blooper reels, a section called Tips from the Pros and interviews. She is also responsible for the production of a documentary about the project, she said

Michael Metcalf said he is responsible for marketing for the project. He said his job is to figure out how to pay for the project while finding an audience for it.

One way of supporting a project is to ask companies to be sponsors, he said. He said film equipment companies are a good start. Finding a good audience for the project, as well as financial backing, will leave a good future for other immersion projects, he said.

Smith said he hopes Ball State's immersion programs will draw attention to Indiana industry and new media.
