Showtunes floated up the elevator shaft Wednesday as junior musical theatre major Ashton Naprier waited for a ride to the third floor.
About ten minutes later, the Muncie police and fire department officials arrived and opened the elevator doors. Inside were 12 musical theatre majors in full costumes stuck between the basement and first floor of the Arts and Communication Building.
Fire department lieutenant Chris Spencer said he thought the elevator could hold about 1,600 pounds, but the 12 people most likely exceeded that limit.
"I've seen this happen a couple of times," he said. "These elevators just get overloaded with people and can't handle the weight."
