AC building floods Monday

Radiator coil bursts; three-day weekend cut short for crew

The long weekend for crew members from facilities planning and management was cut short after the basement of the Arts and Communication building flooded Monday evening.

Maintenance Supervisor Mike Williams said the cold temperatures outside caused a radiator coil in a mechanical room to freeze and burst. The water flooded out of the coil and covered the floor in a shallow pool, he said.

Sgt. Terrell Smith of the Ball State University Police Department said the department received a call about 5:30 p.m.

Crews shut off the radiator coil and used pumps to drain the water, Smith said.

The water flooded most of the basement, but most damage was done to the floors, Smith said.

Crew members used towels and blankets it create a dam outside some of the offices to prevent the water from damaging those areas.

Williams said he did not know how much the damage would cost.

About five custodians were called in to clean up the mess, he said.

"When I found out what happened, I said just call them all," he said.

Smith said the flood would not disrupt classes in AC today.
