After her team's 18-point second half comeback Thursday night, Ball State University women's basketball coach Tracy Roller said it was just a matter of time before the Cardinals struggling offense would step up.
"Eventually we were going to get the opportunity to come back," Roller said. "I was just waiting for the offense to click, and that moment came in the second half."
Despite the 61-57 loss at Indiana State University, the Ball State offense out scored the Sycamores 42-24 in the second half.
Indiana State opened the game with a 17 unanswered points, starting 4-5 from behind the arch, before Porchia Green stopped the bleeding with a layup four minutes into the game. Before the Green layup, Ball State began the game shooting 0-13 from the floor.
After mounting a comeback at 22-12, Indiana State out scored the Cardinals 13-2 the rest of the half. Ball State went into the locker room down 37-15 on 20 percent shooting, their worst offense half of the season.
In the second half the Cardinals out scored the Sycamores by 18 points but could not close out the victory. Redshirt freshman Kyleigh Jones led the Cardinal comeback with 10 points.
"It feels really good to get back onto the floor," Jones said, " I am starting to really get to know my teammates and my role on the team."
At the end of last season, Ball State was 3-1 against Indiana schools. After Thursday's loss to Indiana State, the Cardinals are 0-3 against their in-state rivals this season.
Against the Sycamores, Ball State tallied its sixth loss, a point they did not reach last season until it was eliminated by Bowling Green State University in the Mid-American Conference Championship March 10.
After losing its fourth straight game, Roller said she saw something that made her feel better about her offense.
"The kids are playing with a lot of heart," Roller said, "Our team hasn't given up, and we are just trying to get better."
