Playing its seventh and eighth game in two weeks, the Ball State University women's basketball team is trying to study game tape and finals material the next three days.
With games against Indiana State University Thursday and the University of Evansville Saturday, the Cardinals are trying to stop a three-game losing streak. Coach Tracy Roller said the Cardinals have very little practice time to revive their struggling offense that has averaged 52 points a game during the slide.
"We are watching a lot of film and having opportunities to try to figure it out together as a team," Roller said. "We are not executing our game plan, and we don't have a lot of court time to fix it. We are doing everything we can, but our schedule isn't getting any easier. Everyone is slammed with finals so basketball is an attempt to get away."
The Ball State offense shot 29 percent against Illinois State University Tuesday night and an average of 32 percent during the last three games. In an offense that had players scoring 10 or more points 19 times in the first five games, the Cardinals' last three contests have seen five of their players in double digits.
Ball State came into the season riding a Mid-American Conference championship and a 24-7 record last year, and the team is now 3-5 on the season.
Senior Julie DeMuth said all that matters now is the upcoming games in Terre Haute and Evansville.
"We had high expectations as a team," DeMuth said. "Now, we have to prove it to ourselves and take it game by game."
Looking past the three straight losses, Roller said her team is out of sync and hopes the time together on the road will mend the holes for the upcoming weeks.
"Nobody likes to lose, especially when you're as big of competitors as this team," Roller said. "We know we had a tough schedule, but it's not how you start, it's how you finish."
