The Doctor is in

With time at home during Winter Break, schedule check-ups with your doctors to give yourself a healthful start to next semester

Optometrist

What: eye exam, test for glaucoma

When: as problems occur or as recommended by a doctor

Bullis said the American Optometry Association recommends people visit an eye doctor once per year. However, there is no scientific evidence that vision screening is necessary for young adults, he said. If students have problems seeing clearly and are performing poorly in school, they should schedule an appointment with an optometrist, Bullis said.

Eye exams are a good early detection mechanism for glaucoma, according to WebMD.

Testing for STDs

What: usually a blood test

When: after every new sexual partner, or if one is in a steady relationship, once per year

Anyone who is sexually active and younger than age 25 should be tested for STDs at least once per year, Health Center Director Kent Bullis said. Getting tested is important for early detection of sexual viruses such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and herpes, he said.

Instructor of physical education Kendra Gotsch said people should get tested after every new sexual partner, but sometimes STDs are not detectable immediately after a sexual encounter.

DermatologistWhat: overall check for melanoma

When: as problems occur or once per year for those with a family history of skin cancer

People who have fair skin or go tanning regularly should go to the dermatologist at least once per year, Gotsch said.Bullis said dermatologist visits are mainly pre-screening for cancer. Physicians check moles and freckles for melanoma, he said.

According to WebMD, the warning signs of melanoma are asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation and a diameter larger than six millimeters.

Physical Examination

What: general check-up

When: once every two years

The most important part of the physical is having your blood pressure checked, Bullis said. Screening for alcohol use and depression is also beneficial, he said. Bullis said people with a family history of heart problems should have their cholesterol levels checked.

Dentist

What: general teeth cleaning, visual examination of mouth

When: once every six months

Routine visits help maintain oral hygiene, Gotsch said.

According to WebMD, dental check-ups are important to prevention and early detection of tooth decay and gum disease.

Gynecologist

What: Pap smear, vaginal examination

When: once per year after age 18

It is especially important for women who are sexually active to get a pap smear, Gotsch said. Gynecological exams are important tools for early detection of cervical cancer and other vaginal diseases.
