SGA meet for last time in '07

Roommate search reaches dead end; solutions welcome

To lighten spirits before finals the Ball State University Student Government Association senators had a white elephant gift exchange to end their last meeting of Fall Semester. Before the exchange, the senators met in their respective caucuses and committees to discuss the progress of platform items in the research or implementation process.

Below is a breakdown of what was shared:

Caucus reports:

Off-campus: Caucus Secretary David Voelker said he spoke with legal services about setting up a roommate search for off-campus students. Voelker said he was told the search could not be done because if there were an issue with the roommates, the university could be held accountable. SGA Vice President Jamie Manuel said the off-campus roommate search was a U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative platform item and even though it could not be completed, he and the other executive slate members were open to a compromise and finding another solution.

At-Large: Chairman Frank Hood said both legislation for putting benches in front of the Burkhardt Building and legislation about having computers in the Health Center lobby would be ready for the senate when it reconvenes for Spring Semester. Hood said he also was continuing looking into getting Cardinal Cash to work for washers and dryers in the residence halls.

Committee reports:

Academic Affairs: Chairman Carson Lance said he received more feedback from deans and departmental chairpersons about the university having a Dead Week.

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs: Chairman Travis Schilla said he and his committee discussed having a second annual Multicultural Late Nite for the Spring Semester.

Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness: Chairman Shawn Meier said the How-to book would go to the executive slate next week. During break, he said, he would go over a list of ideas that senators e-mailed to him about ways to market SGA and get its name out.

Student Safety: Chairwoman Carrie Cozad said she was still waiting to hear from the Residence Hall Association about informing students on the university's pepper spray and mace policies. She said she and her committee, if not another SGA committee or caucus, would look into other ways to break up ice on the sidewalks. One method could be by using molasses, which she said was used in her hometown instead of salt.

Student Services: Chairman Frank Hood said he sent an e-mail about putting school supplies in the Bookmark Café to Director of Campus Dining Jon Lewis.
