In 2005 people yelled racial slurs out a car window at a Ball State University student.
This summer racist notes were discovered in former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson's office.
Jan. 18 N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk, a comedy show dealing with diversity, stereotyping and racial issues, will come to campus.
The name of the group will catch peoples' attention, the organizers of the event hope this will promote discussion and take power away from words with negative connotations.
Issues such as stereotyping and diversity need to be addressed - and by more people than the 12 campus groups sponsoring NWC.
Go to the show, laugh-it is a comedy show, think about what you learn and then discuss it. Attending this performance shows that you are willing to discuss issues in a civilized manner.
It's easy to sit back and observe negative events, such as the 2005 racial slurs or this summer's racist notes. It takes more effort to do something, to open discussion about the deeper problems.
But it needs to be done.
Ball State is a college campus. The people here are supposed to be learning and open to new experiences. Close-mindedness about these issues has no place here.
Ignoring the issues will not work either.
People need to get together, discuss the issues and figure out solution - find ways to make improvements.
