Winter weather has taken over the campus, finally.
We got to live in the land that Mother Nature forgot for most of fall; however, she's back and appears ready to make up for lost time.
Snow should arrive today and between one and three inches are expected to accumulate.
It seems the 50 and 60 degree highs of the past few weeks have come to an end; The National Weather service projects today's high to be 30 degrees.
Some students enjoy getting dressed up for classes and looking pretty while others are content to wear a hoodie and PJs to class every day. Either way, we've gotten used to being able to ignore the calendar and just enjoy the weather.
However, now it is impossible to ignore the fact it's pretty cold outside. Seeing your breath in the middle of the afternoon is probably a good indication that you might need to wear a coat.
However, some students prefer to traipse around in a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, as some hold-outs are still traipzing around in this attire.
Winter apparel suggestions from the National Weather Service include wearing several layers of lightweight clothing.
Air becomes trapped within the layers and works to keep the body warmer.
Several layers does not mean a T-shirt and a track jacket.
Protect hands, feet and ears because they are prone to frostbite.
Sidenote, it might be a good idea to protect your ears with more than just earbuds or headphones.
Last but not least, wear a hat. A large amount of body heat escapes through the head.
We know your hair is luscious and full, but it doesn't have the same effect as a hat.
We happen to be in a position where we have access to warm, weather-friendly clothing that keeps us safe and toasty from the elements. No matter how hard the Muncie wind might blow.
Others are not so lucky.
Cold weather does not do pleasant things to the body. Hands become raw, lips get chapped and don't forget about the actual physical effects.
When are you out in cold weather for extended periods of time, it strains the body.
Frostbite and hypothermia are not unheard of and people die every year because of exposure to cold.
While it's unlikely a student would contract either, it's just something to keep in mind.
We're lucky that we don't have to worry about it. We have clothes, coats, boots and scarves. If you don't have one, and are low on cash, go to Goodwill.
It all comes down to one thing: bundle up.
