For the first time this season the Ball State University swimming and diving teams will compete in a two-day invitational.
The Cardinals will play host to the Doug Coers Invitational at 6 p.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. They will then continue their meet against Findlay College and Grand Valley State University Saturday.
"The idea is to get them ready for a championship meet," coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.
The biggest difference with this meet will not be the two days but that the meet is split into segments like a championship meet, Seibold-Caudill said.
Also, every individual's scores will count in the standings of the meet.
Because all the scores count, Seibold-Caudill said, the meet will favor teams with more depth. She said the format will favor Ball State.
The meet will feature 40 total events for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
It is the fourth year of the invitational. Last year the Cardinals defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and IUPUI.
Last week the men's team, in its first meet in more than a month, lost to the University at Buffalo. The women's team also lost to Buffalo but defeated the University of Akron Friday.
"The loss to Buffalo was very, very frustrating because we knew we could beat them," Seibold-Caudill said.
Sophomore diver Lisa Maertin said the team is confident going into this weekend's meet.
Seibold-Caudill also said she is confident going into the meet. It is important for the athletes to focus on their individual performances and the team results will fall into place, she said.
Despite her confidence, Seibold-Caudill said Grand Valley State would be a tough team. The Lakers, who are coached by former Ball State swimmer Andy Boyce, will be tough.
