One day after the University of Toledo beat the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team, the Cardinals rebounded and defeated Bowling Green State University.
Ball State beat Bowling Green 193 to 107 as the Cardinals won 11 of the day's 16 events.
"We came back against Bowling Green and did a phenomenal job," co-coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.
Ball State was led by freshman Maria Gramelspacher and senior Addison Del Rio, who both won two events Saturday against Bowling Green. They also had the team's two wins in the meet against Toledo Friday, which the Cardinals lost 212 to 88.
"The score doesn't really reflect how we swam," senior Addison Del Rio said.
Del Rio won the 100 yard butterfly against Toledo and the 100 yard breaststroke and 100 yard freestyle against Bowling Green.
Gramelspacher won the 200 yard butterfly against Toledo and the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly against Bowling Green.
"I think I did OK but there is always room for improvement," Gramelspacher said.
While Gramelspacher said she did OK, Seibold-Caudill said she was very impressive.
"Maria is a tough swimmer," she said. "She's really coming through and meeting all my expectations."
As a team the Cardinals knew they would have a tough meet against Toledo, Seibold-Caudill said. Toledo is going to be a tough team and one of the best in the Mid-American Conference, she said.
Because the team knew they would likely get beat, Seibold-Caudill said it was not too upset with the loss. Because swimming and diving is individual in addition to team-oriented, Ball State viewed the meet as a chance to see its individuals perform, she said.
"There are a lot of races where it was really close," Seibold-Caudill said. "Was the meet close? No. But a lot of races were close."
One of the individuals who was close was sophomore Mary Ehresman as she was touched out Friday in close races, Seibold-Caudill said.
She also said sophomore Lisa Maertin was impressive as she picked up her first collegiate win in the three meter diving against Bowling Green.
The Cardinals also got wins against Bowling Green from junior Meghan Patterson in the 1,000 yard freestyle, junior Megan Ploetz in the 200 yard butterfly, sophomore Emily Hurst in the 200 yard breaststroke and freshman Katie Bylsma in the 50 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle relay.
Seibold-Caudill said Ball State has more depth than Bowling Green but not as much as Toledo, which led to the results.
Del Rio said it was good to get in meets against MAC opponents early in the season to get experience.
"Overall I think the meet went really well," Del Rio said.
