SOFTBALL: Four players sign letters of intent to BSU

Four players signed national letters of intent to play for the Ball State University softball team Friday.

The players will join the team in 2009.

Kim Mazzapica is a pitcher and outfielder from Palm Harbor, Fla. This summer she went 15-4 with an .073 earned run average with her club team. She struck out 143 batters and walked 27 in 125 innings. She earned all-conference and all-county honors each of her first three years of high school.

Katie Rynex is a pitcher from Herndon, Va. She had an ERA of 0.72 with her club team in the summer and hit .451. She holds her high school's strikeout record with 143 in her career. She was the first pitcher in her school's history to pitch a perfect game.

Amanda Montalto plays catcher and first base and is from Las Vegas. She hit .408 last year with 36 runs batted in. She was Second Team All-Northwest in Las Vegas for her club team.

Lisa Cappa is a middle infielder from Lafayette. She hit .315 with 16 RBIs and 10 doubles last season.

"We added four solid student-athletes to the program with this class," coach Craig Nicholson said in a press release. "This class was about filling needs, both immediately and for the future. We are very excited with this class, and we look forward to building the program with players that are great both on and off the field."
