Muncie to announce new mayor

Officials might not declare winner until Dec. 20 if votes are recounted

Muncie's mayoral mystery is about to be solved - at least until a recount.

Delaware County Clerk Karen Wenger said the election board will meet at 10:30 a.m. today to review all absenttee and provisional ballots. After adding the approved ballots to the current total, the winner of the mayoral race will be announced, Wenger said.

State law requires Muncie to announce its new mayor by noon today, but the losing candidate has until Tuesday to demand a recount, Wenger said. The candidate's political party has until Nov. 26 to demand a recount as well, she said.

The deadline for the city to finish the recount is Dec. 20, Wenger said.

According to the clerks office, democratic candidate Jim Mansfield leads republican candidate Sharon McShurley by nine votes with a total of 6,127.

Wenger said there is a total of 20 votes that will be reviewed during today's meeting. As of Thursday afternoon, 10 voters had come in to validate provisional ballots, she said.

McShurley said in a previous interview she plans to call for a recount because of the small margin of victory.
