The Ball State University women's golf team moved up three spots to finish in eighth place to end its season during the second day of the UNC-Greensboro Starmount Fall Classic.
Coach Katherine Mowat said she doesn't know what caused the Tuesday's improvement.
"It's one of the mysteries of sports," Mowat said. "Most of the team was off [Monday] and was disappointed. We knew we could play better than that and prove ourselves. [Tuesday] we had emotion, we were feeling motivated and fired up."
Freshman Brittany Kelly ignited the turn-around, dropping six strokes off her score during the second day of the tournament with a 73. With her improved play, the freshman finished with a 152, which put her in a tie at 29th overall.
"I was hitting greens, which was making the difference," Kelley said. "I hit six greens in the first day, and I hit double that the second day. I was also hitting my irons better."
The Cardinals have a history of better performances on the first day of tournaments. The team puts up better numbers on day one in three of its five tournaments this season. After improving its team score from 319 to 296, Mowat said this tournament allowed them to finish the year on a high note.
"Today was great, but yesterday was a bad day," Mowat said. "We didn't play well yesterday. Today we came out to play and proved ourselves to end the year."
