Talent takes BSU

More than 800 watch students compete for several scholarships

Sophomore dance major Michael Humphrey was awarded $1,000 in scholarship money for winning the overall dance categories for his dance, which he choreographed to "Dare You to Move" by Switchfoot.

Humphrey, who was the only entrant in the dance category, said he was surprised when the judges announced his name because he didn't think they would acknowledge his category.

"I'm really excited," he said. "The crowd was awesome; I didn't expect for them to be so loud when [the masters of ceremonies] called my name."

Humphrey said he has been dancing for three years.

The Student Scholarship Talent Search began at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the John R. Emens Auditorium, with 887 students in attendance, Kimberly Jackson, Homecoming Steering Committee publicity chairwoman, said.

Twenty acts performed and $4,500 worth of scholarship money was given to student competitors. The scholarship money was provided by the Alumni Association, Jenna Dock, Homecoming Steering Committee talent search coordinator said.

"I thought the talent search went extremely well tonight," Dock said. "It went really smooth, and the acts were great to work with."

Although the judges pronounced Humphrey the overall winner, sophomore yo-yo artist Noel Kunz's performance, "A Little of Yo Time," was a crowd favorite.

Kunz used yo-yos of different sizes, sometimes simultaneously, to execute his tricks. Kunz's performance to a Maroon Five song earned him a $500 scholarship for winning the freestyle category.

"You don't see something like that everyday," junior criminal justice major Mandii Landis said.

Landis said Kunz's act was indescribable.

"It was just amazing seeing tricks with the yo-yo to music people listen to everyday," she said.

Kunz said he was happy with his performance despite a minor glitch.

"You can recover from any mistake you make when you feed off the crowd," he said.

Judge Jan Richard said she scored contestants based on natural ability and noticeable preparations.

"What I look for is someone that gives me chills, someone with a wow factor," she said.
