Though the NCAA released its findings of Ball State University athletics infractions Tuesday, softball coach Craig Nicholson knew about the sanctions against his team prior to the release.
Ball State imposed sanctions on the softball team that caused it to lose two hours of practice during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school years. Softball teams are normally allotted 20 hours a week but with the sanctions Ball State gets 18.
"At this point it's kind of a closure thing with the NCAA release of this now, and at the end of the academic year, it's over with," Nicholson said.
Nicholson said he thought the penalty was fair. He said they did not have much of an effect on his team as he has to be more prepared and use time wisely.
The softball team's violations did not occur while Nicholson was coach. He replaced Terri Laux as the softball coach July 19, 2006 after her contract was not renewed following the 2006 season.
The softball team violated NCAA rules by exceeding practice hour limitations and not counting athletes' work as mandatory athletically-related activities, according to the press release.
Nicholson said he knew about the sanctions when he took the coaching job.
