More than 100 people attended Keen, Inc. shoe manufacturer's presentation "Stand up, out and for sustainability," which was about environmental awareness and sustainability.
The presentation showed three films about how small changes could make a difference.
Jesse Miller, a member of Students for a Sustainable Campus, said environmental responsibility was a social luxury years ago, but now people must become more active.
"We should act like we are an advanced generation," he said.
Miller said people can incorporate eco-friendly ideas into their daily lives to improve the environment.
"There are earth-friendly beers," he said. "I can drink responsibly in an environmental way."
The films presented profiled individuals who are environmentally responsible, such as a sculptor who uses recyclable materials and someone who recycles electronics to keep wastes from being improperly disposed in third world countries.
Freshman music composition major Nick Jones said the presentation did not provide any new information, but it did broaden his perspective on the issue.
"[There was] Nothing that concrete or new about the presentation," he said, "but it was still refreshing and added a new perspective on how I viewed things. It broadened my perspective on how I can improve the environment [with] small changes."
Adam Younger, American Advertising Federation President, said they were responsible with a marketing strategy.
"Our job was to build publishing and bring people to the event," he said.
AAF adviser Michael Hanley said the opportunity provided an "immersive learning experience" to students.
"It's good for us to work with a real life company," he said.
"They knew what our history of environmental stewardship was," he said.
AAF provided students with pizza at the lecture and Keen threw giveaways such as shirts into the crowd.
Chris Enlow, foundation manager for Keen, also said individuals can apply for the Hybrid.STAND contest, which will reward students who have an idea about sustanability with financial aid to help follow through with their endeavour.
"Everything has a cost to it and you need funds," he said.
Keen is a company that creates sandals from recycle material and sells their products on an environmental angle, and they are traveling to 50 universities across campus to raise sustainability awareness.
Enlow said the company is seeking to improve awareness and improve the environment.
"We are not doing everything right but we are actively seeking that path," he said.
