FIELD HOCKEY: Bobcats devour Cards in second half

Cardinals blow lead; BSU forward passed for MAC scoring lead

Going into halftime, Ball State University's field hockey team held a 3-2 lead over No. 15 and defending Mid-American Conference champion Ohio University. It appeared the Cardinals' luck might be changing after two overtime defeats in the last two meetings of the rivalry.

However, the Bobcats stormed back, led by Torrie Albini's two second-half goals, and Ohio edged the Cardinals 4-3.

The loss dropped Ball State to 3-10 and 1-5 in the MAC.

"We played a very good game [Friday]," coach Annette Payne said. "I'm proud of this team."

The Cardinals were led offensively by sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary, who scored two goals and added an assist in the first half, giving her five goals in the last two games.

"We played really well in the first half," MacGillivary said. "We had lots of opportunities."

After attempting four shots in the first half, Ball State had one in the second half. For the game, Ohio outshot the Cardinals 15-5.

"The first half was very good," Payne said. "Unfortunately we weren't able to do that in the second half."

Torrie Albini, who leads the MAC with 12 goals, scored the game-tying goal and 11 minutes later, she buried a shot into the net off of a penalty corner.

Midfielder Jodi Mann said Ball State's defense tried to stop Ohio from getting penalty corner.

"We try to keep them out of our circle so they won't get any penalty corners," Mann said.

Albini's goals broke the tie between herself and MacGillivary for the league scoring lead. However, MacGillivary said she wasn't concerned with individual numbers.

"I don't like to focus on myself," MacGillivary said. "I think of the team as one."

Currently in fifth place, Ball State will next play at Kent State University on Sunday.

Mann said the game is a must-win for Ball State.

"We need to make a statement in this game," she said. "We definitely need to come out with a win."
