The National American Chemical Society awarded the Ball State University chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society an Honorable Mention Chapter Award because of the club's annual report for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Chemistry Club president Chris Suskovick said the chapter submits a report to the American Chemical Society, which then determines how well the club is doing in comparison to clubs around the nation.
"This is the first recognition that the club, as a whole, has been rewarded," Suskovick said. "It is also the first time it has been awarded at Ball State."
Faculty Adviser Jason Ribblett said an honorable mention equals a third place award.
Almost every university has a chapter, but only about 100 of those organizations win awards, he said.
"It's a pretty big honor because they are so picky," Ribblett said. "We have been active for about four years since I have been the faculty adviser, and this is the first time we have won an award."
Ribblett said the chapter probably won the award because of the large number of members, activities and community outreaches they have participated in.
Some of the activities the club participates in include the National American Chemical Society Conference and Science Day on the Greenway, where the students teach science experiments and chemistry demonstrations to children and community members.
Ribblett said the chapter will receive a plaque for the award in the spring.
Suskovick said the award was not an individual effort but involved the whole club.
"I'm proud of everyone participating in the club," Suskovick said. "It takes a lot of effort."
The Ball State chapter has increased membership from about four regular members to about 50 since 2004, Suskovick said.
"It's nice to see how it all came together from my first year," he said.
