Charges will be filed against the five Ball State University-affiliated women accused of assaulting a sixth once complete information regarding the victim's injuries is available, Muncie officials said Tuesday.
Delaware County's deputy prosecuting attorney Judi Calhoun said that she has not received the entire case file and wants complete information regarding the victim Christina Elslinger's injuries before pressing charges.
"I don't want to rush into charging something if the injuries are worse than I thought," she said.
The earliest Calhoun said she expected to file charges was the middle of next week.
Five Ball State University-affiliated women now identified as Ashley Kirkman, 20, Amanda Polson, 19, Alysse Popov, 20, Kari Streib, 20 and Rene Whiteley, 19, are accused of battery with serious injury.
Muncie Police Department Detective Jami Brown said in an earlier interview that she did not expect more arrests to be made in this case.
According to police reports, the fight broke out in the 1900 block of North Maplewood Avenue Oct. 7.
Elslinger suffered severe injuries that resulted in a surgery to reconstruct her elbow, Brown said.
A rift between two groups of girls has been growing for some time, Brown said.
The fight began with a verbal confrontation between Elslinger and one of the accused women, according to police reports, and escalated to a street brawl.
Brown said after the incident the accused women bragged about their activities on Facebook.
"The victim, family and Muncie Police Department will be assisted with the information from Facebook," Brown said. "It could possibly serve as evidence."
