About 300 people laugh to comedian

Delta Zeta sorority, Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity sponsor event

The crowd cheered as the lights dimmed and the night's first comic was introduced.

Brooke Reynolds, vice president of programs for Delta Zeta sorority, said the organization worked with Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity to co-sponsor Wednesday's comedy show in Pruis Hall.

About 300 people attended, she said.

Phil Mazo opened for headliner Steve Hofstetter at the event.

"We got pulled over on the way here for tailgating an Escalade for like an hour," Mazo said. "I was like, 'Officer, I was just trying to watch the movie.'"

Hofstetter opened with a joke about Indiana and daylight-saving time.

"Until last year, you never knew what time it was in Indiana," he said. "You guys have farmers, so apparently you're better than us."

Reynolds said this was the second time Delta Zeta has sponsored Hofstetter to perform at Ball State University.

"We were happy to bring him back again," she said. "He's been really supportive of the greek community because he's greek himself."

Hofstetter said he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

"It's good to be back," he said. "I love Ball State. I had fun the last time I was here."

Hofstetter commented on Pruis Hall's architecture, saying the building had "shelves up to the ceiling for no apparent reason."

He mentioned that, during his last performance in the building, he climbed one of the "shelves" and was not going to do it this time.

That changed, however, as he suddenly jumped up onto that same "shelf" at the end of his show and the crowd cheered him on.

"I don't know why I did that," he said. "It really hurt my arm. My Guitar Hero game will never be the same."

Freshman advertising major Matthew Stinnett said he enjoyed the show.

"I thought he was hilarious," he said.

Reynolds said profits from the event went toward chapter expenses.

"We plan on using the money we made tonight for more community outreach and fun events like this one," she said.
