WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals at home for weekend play

Playing host to the Ball State Classic and playing two matches is what is ahead for the Ball State University women's volleyball team this weekend.

First up for the Cardinals is Eastern Illinois University today, followed by Illinois State University Saturday.

Ball State comes into the weekend with a record of 1-5, while Eastern Illinois is 3-4 and Illinois State is 6-2 on the season.

The Cardinals went 1-2 in the season opening Nike Active Ankle Challenge and were swept in the Hofstra Invitational last weekend.

So far this season, many Ball State players have received significant playing time as coach Dave Boos experiments with lineups, trying to find the best one for each match.

However, one constant has been freshman Alyssa Rio as the libero. Rio has recorded double-digit digs in all six matches including a career-high 41 against Southeast Missouri State University. She has 151 total digs and a Mid-American Conference leading 6.57 digs per game average.

Offensively the Cardinals have four players with 50 or more kills. Leading the way are sophomores Elaina Katatolis, with 75, and Julie Breivogel, with 60. However, freshman Abby LaVigne had a break-out performance in the Cardinals' most recent match. She pounded out 17 kills after having four total in her first four matches.

The Cardinals are 174-32 in Worthen Arena since its opening in 1992.
