WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BSU tries to stop skid

Cardinals play IUPUI with hopes of ending 7-match losing streak

The next chance for the Ball State women's volleyball team to snap its school-record seven-match losing streak comes today in Indianapolis against IUPUI.

The Cardinals are 1-7 on the season, marking the worst start in Ball State history, and most recently lost both home matches in the Ball State Classic this past weekend.

"The big things for us are to learn from this past weekend," coach Dave Boos said. "We will spend a lot of time on video and we will be serving and passing everyday in practice."

The Cardinals totaled 64 errors in the Classic's two matches. Senior Brittany May said the problem is the team isn't concentrating enough.

"Right now I think we need to regain focus on everything we have learned through practice," May said. "We've lost that focus. We just need to translate what we do in practice into games, because we are really good in practice."

Having started at least 12 matches the past two seasons, May has recently found herself coming off the bench. May said she has adjusted to this role, and when she is called upon, she is ready to go in and attack.

May said in order for the team to turn things around they need to settle down and relax once they get into a match.

"We need to keep our energy level that we have in practice," May said. "When we get here the crowd is here and we get too excited and get over our heads."

Although the match today against IUPUI doesn't affect the Cardinal's Mid-American Conference standings, Boos said that doesn't mean the match isn't important.

IUPUI enters the match with a 7-5 record and is 1-1 against MAC opponents.

"Any match that we can build some positives will be big for us," Boos said. "As we get a win here and there it is going to build our confidence so that we can start playing some fun and exciting volleyball."
