OUR VIEW: FAN-tastic

AT ISSUE: Students should support football team as Cardinals continue one of best seasons in years

Get to bed early tonight, Cardinals fans. Saturday's going to be a big day with the football team playing at home for the first time since the season opener.

And what a great season it's been so far. The team is 2-2, but both loses were by only one point, instead of the 30-point massacres of previous seasons.

In seasons past, other schools scheduled Ball State for easy wins. Last week, the Cardinals nearly beat No. 24 University of Nebraska. Only one week before that, Ball State defeated a non-conference opponent for the first time in five years.

This is the team we've been waiting for. The players work together; the defense is stepping up, and the offense plays like winners.

On Monday, quarterback Nate Davis was awarded the Mid-American Conference West Division offensive player of the week, and some people speculate he could be the next great MAC quarterback.

Saturday is a chance to see how good Davis and the rest of the team is as they play without starting running back, MiQuale Lewis who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

If the team can keep up the momentum it has been showing on the road, Ball State will be outstanding with a home-field advantage. You should have pride in the team and want to be there to see this game and cheer the football team to victory. We broke the student attendance record at the first game of the season and should break it again Saturday when we crowd the stands to watch Ball State win.

Fans are excited, as evidenced by the record number of students at the season opener and the number of patrons at local restaurants that showed the Nebraska game. Usually by this time in the season, Ball State has a losing record and fans give up. Not this year. Go to Scheumann Stadium on Saturday and be part of the excitement of a real, competitive college football game.

Wear red, as coach Brady Hoke requested, so when the University at Buffalo players look at the stands they see a huge mass of red-shirted fans full of Cardinal pride. Be loud and proud yelling your cheers and CHIRP! CHIRP! CHIRP!
