MEN'S BASKETBALL: Two players leave team

Two members of the Ball State University men's basketball team arrested in the last week are no longer with the Cardinals.

Forward Kevin Ford was dismissed from the team and guard Jalon Perryman voluntarily decided to leave the program, according to a statement Friday by coach Billy Taylor.

In the past week, police arrested both players in separate incidents.

Perryman was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, minor consumption and failure to appear in court. Perryman was released on a $6,000 bond and faces a potential Class D felony for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Indiana Code.

On Sunday, Ford was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, illegal possession of alcohol by a minor and an attempt by a minor to enter a tavern. He was released from jail Sunday morning on a $2,000 bond.

"I am very disappointed the situation has not worked out for either of these two young men," Taylor said. "It's an unfortunate situation; however, we wish both Kevin and Jalon the best as they move forward."

This is the second time Perryman, a junior, has left the Cardinals. In April, Perryman announced he was leaving the team and transferring from Ball State. However, he returned to the university in August, and rejoined the team. Last season, Perryman played in 23 of 31 games, averaging 3.7 points per game.

Taylor said Perryman leaving the team was a mutual decision that was in Perryman's best interest.

Ford, a transfer student from Southern Idaho University, was recruited by former coach Ronny Thompson earlier this year and stayed at Ball State following Thompson's resignation.
