Welcome week full of activities

UPB plans week of events to welcome students to new year

Ball State University students can enjoy super-sized games at 5 p.m. today at the University Green as part of the University Program Board's Welcome Week.

Matt Marshall, associate director for programs, said the week's events began with free Carter's hot dogs and snacks at the corner of McKinley and Riverside avenues on Monday.

"Welcome Week is a good opportunity for students to get involved and experience extracurricular activities on campus," he said.

UPB will sponsor the events, which will include live comedy, giant games and a 45-foot Slip N' Slide, Marshall said.

The week will conclude with the 17th annual Quad Bash from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, which the Museum of Art and Dining cosponsored, he said.

According to UPB advertisements, the Quad Bash will be "bigger, better and wetter than ever."

Marshall said admission to the Quad Bash is free with a student ID and $5 for guests.

The event will feature a live performance from the band Shilo, free food, a rock wall, a dunk tank, volleyball and a screening of the movie "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," he said.

Tania Said, curator of education for the Museum of Art, said the museum will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday for a student-geared evening. Students can come for a free poster and check out new and existing exhibitions such as The Abstract Expressionist Print on the museum's lower floor, she said.

John Bennett, associate director of orientation, said UPB anticipates a bigger turnout than previous years because there are more activities available.

Part of that turnout might be attributed to students living in the dorms, he said.

Resident assistants plan to lead students to the event, a strategy that is expected to bring in a bigger crowd, Bennett said.
